John Gualbert

(c. 990–1073)
   Order Founder and Saint.
John was a Benedictine monk, first at San Miniato, Italy and then at Camaldoli. Later in Vallumbrosa, he formed his own community based on a modified form of the Rule of St Benedict, but with a greater emphasis on austerity and penance. The Vallumbrosian monks spread throughout ltaly and the order still exists. Members lead a hermit-like existence and it is essentially a contemplative order. Laybrothers were introduced to do manual work and perpetual silence is observed. At one stage galileo was a Vallumbrosian novice.
